I share my love for the Universal Standard Next To Naked Bodysuit regularly on Instagram. I find it so comfortable, supportive yet not restrictive, flattering (gosh, that is a loaded term) without being compressive. It's a favorite for working from home and doing yoga, but as I shared in my Universal Standard Next to Naked Bodysuit review, I think it is a piece that can be styled beyond the house or the gym so here's how to style bodysuit. Specifically, I wanted to figure out multiple ways of how to style the Universal Standard Next To Naked Bodysuit!

This post may look familiar. I completely revamped and republished it to update it with current information, products, and trends. I bought my first Universal Standard Next to Naked Bodysuit in 2020 and now in 2025, I own two full-length versions and two of the bodyshort versions. Needless to say, I am a fan.

While this body suit (nicknamed by Universal Standard fans as the NTN) is great for yoga, lounging, and low-impact fitness, it is also great for fashion. And fashion is usually how I find myself wearing the Next to Naked Bodysuit. I wanted to share some ways I have styled this versatile piece that for me, has become a wardrobe staple.

How to Style the Universal Standard Next to Naked Bodysuit

The Universal Standard Next to Naked Bodysuit is an incredibly versatile piece; below I share some outfits and situations where I have styled it:

Denim is Always a Good Idea

Regardless of the color of your bodysuit, it likely will look fantastic with denim. The length of the denim jacket depends on your personal style and comfort level. From a classic trucker jacket to a denim trench, a denim safari jacket, or a denim shirt jacket, denim is always a good idea.

You saw this denim ruana before in my 2021 Chico's ruana review. I still own this denim ruana because it's so unique it transcends trends, and the boxy fit is always comfortable and breezy on a warmer spring day. I found this denim cape jacket at Gap and this denim poncho at Ann Taylor that give a similar effect.

I balanced the volume with a pair of Adidas Superstar sneakers, which are a perennial favorite (I've been wearing this style of sneaker since high school). Choosing a belt bag as a crossbody tempers the volume of the denim and also pulls together all the pieces with an athletic/streety vibe.

The collage above shows how to style the Universal Standard Next to Nothing bodysuit with a classic denim trucker jacket, providing the same effect as my ruana.

Layer on a Boyfriend Blazer

A boyfriend blazer is a blazer that is a relaxed or boxy silhouette and is a bit longer in length. This is a perfect topper for the Universal Standard Next to Nothing bodysuit.

For this look, I paired the NTN bodysuit with a tan poplin boyfriend blazer from J. Crew. I got this blazer a couple of years ago and still own it; this blazer is similar. Again to balance the volume on top I chose a chunkier shoe; this time I picked a pair of Dr. Marten's lace-up ankle boots.

Here, I created a look that incorporates the same concept with an herb green blazer in a four-season fabric. The black boot extends the leg line, dressing up this athleisure piece while still looking cohesive.

How to Style Bodysuit: Business Casual

Business casual has gotten progressively more casual over the years and some offices are cool with leggings and athleisure at the office. The Universal Standard bodysuit works for business casual looks in some offices or a professional Zoom when working from home.

I didn't wear this look for work; this is from April 2020, when my sister and I, who were in the same pod, got away for a couple of days at a rental house at Wintergreen. We went to a brewery with private firepit areas six feet apart and were dancing around in this field, so happy to be outside our homes. This is the M.M.LaFleur Snyder Jacket I wore again in December 2020. But it is an example of styling this bodysuit with a belted sweater, sweater coat, or sweater blazer.

Pair the body suit with a sweater blazer or long cardigan that's high-quality and sophisticated. Not only is a sweater blazer a great way to dress up a bodysuit, it's a classic piece that's perfect to add to your capsule wardrobe. Here, I used the iconic M.M.LaFleur Merritt Jardigan, which is available in several colors and sizes XS/00 to XXL/20.

Day-to-Day Chic

This tie-front linen shawl from Anthropologie is a great piece to wear with the Universal Standard bodysuit for warmer days or during transitional weather when you want to slip on or off layers easily. It's light and breathable, has a front tie, and a fun summertime design. It's great for anything from running errands to casual brunches.

Versatile Day-to-night Wear

Another piece I tend to wear with the NTN bodysuit is one of my Universal Standard linen shirt tunics. It can take you through your entire day, regardless of what you may be doing, without feeling like you have to change. Whether running to the coffee shop or working from home, it's an easy and breathable style perfect for warmer weather.

Edgy Chic

If you want to go for an edgier look, try pairing the bodysuit with a leather jacket and bold silver accessories. While I styled the bodysuit with a black leather blazer, you can wear virtually any color and style of preference.

Night-Out Glam

The fun thing about wearing a bodysuit is its ability to easily transition from daytime to nighttime looks with just a few adjustments. I often talk about going out looks for a grown-ass woman because it can feel hard to nail down a fun, sexy, but feel-good look, right? The NTN bodysuit looks great with sparkly and sequin blazers, dusters, and “kimonos.”

  1. I have the full length version and the bike shorts version. I love them both but mostly wear them when I’m home and not in any rush because I’m klutzy and inadvertently will end up with the top half in the toilet when I’m outside my home using a public restroom. But I agree that they are great and very versatile!

  2. I never knew that kind of clothing item is called a ruana. I just called them kimono vests or seen them named as body scarves on Anthropologie (I think). The denim jacket I would just call a short-sleeve jean jacket (yours is cute btw).
I bought the Girl Collective belt bag some months ago after thinking about it for some months. Your recommendation made me pull the trigger. I don’t regret it. I also appreciate the length of the belt, so I can easily wear it cross-body (my typical mode). I do have to mess with the slack belt part, which is annoying but is a minor quibble. I also like that you can supposedly put it in the wash. On my first week, I already got my mustard-yellow (the back of it fortunately) one stained. Will try finally washing it soon.
I’m so in love with belt bags now that I’m tempted to get a fancier leather one from Clare V next (for when I go out to a nice restaurant / bar / party again).

  3. I purchased the Next To Naked Bodysuit after reading your review, and I agree 100% that it’s amazing! Just like you said: you can even go braless in it (I am a curvy, mid 50s woman with 40DDD breasts, so I NEED some support). I have worn it under a long bohemian type duster, under a button up long vest/dress, under an oversized fleece top where it hung off one shoulder. I plan on tying a sarong around it some time in the future, and I’m seriously considering the short version. This was hands down my favorite so far of all the items I’ve found through you, and I thank you so much!!!

  4. Thanks so much for your descriptions of *why* you chose something, making your look read purposeful. Helps me think out why my own looks don’t work sometimes.:-/
